West-facing coast at 20 ft elevation on Kauaʻi's leeward side; long, exposed beach with limited natural high ground nearby.
Waimea Canyon Middle School and Waimea High School (~3 miles east) are the closest official refuges. Kekaha itself has no designated shelter.

Kaumualiʻi Highway (Route 50) east to Waimea, Hanapēpē and Līhuʻe. Route 50 dead-ends past Kekaha at Polihale State Park — Kekaha is effectively the end of the road on Kauaʻi's west side.
Kekaha lies just west of Iniki's (1992) landfall zone and experienced sustained hurricane-force winds and significant coastal damage. The town's low elevation and lack of nearby high ground make evacuation to Waimea's schools essential during any south-track hurricane warning.
Kekaha's west-facing exposure means storms tracking south of Kauaʻi and then turning north can maintain damaging winds here for longer than on the east shore. Because Route 50 is Kekaha's only connection, plan to evacuate at least 24 hours ahead of any warning-level event.
